OACE is pleased to announce details about our 2019 Conference Symposia.  The Symposia are a standalone part of the conference.  You may register for just a symposium or for the conference or both.
The Symposium is THURSDAY JANUARY 24 FROM 9AM-4PM with a one hour lunch from noon to 1PM.

Educational Rights & Stability for All Students (FULL DAY)

​Children and youth in unstable living situations qualify for educational rights and services to help with attend and succeed in school. Homeless, unaccompanied, foster, undocumented and/or migrant student rights are addressed under federal legislation such as the Civil Rights Act, McKinney-Vento, Fostering Connections and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).  In this Symposium, we will explore how laws work to protect students, district requirements, best practices, promising programs and more. Bring your advanced case questions as we tap national expertise in this field.

Civil rights and title IX (Full Day)

Title IX prevents discrimination on the basis of sex and gender.  Federal Law requires that each school have at least one person designated and trained as a (Civil Rights) Title IX Coordinator.  This workshop meets that minimum training requirement.  Topics to be covered will include Sexual Harassment and violence, Title IX and Athletics, Pregnant and Parenting Students, LGBTQ students, (including Transgender Guidelines), Single Gender Classes/Activities, Discipline, CTE and STEM, Employment, and Administrative requirements.  We will also discuss conducting a Title IX investigation alleging discrimination, and have multiple case studies to apply best practices with real life situations.  Any who are interested in learning about how Title IX impacts your school community are welcome to attend.
