Plenary sessions

  • Keynote Speaker Dr. Reyes Quezada of the University of San Diego  will speak on Friday luncheon.
  • Dr. Charles Martinez of the University of Oregon will speak Thursday evening. 
  • Dr. Markisha Smith of the Oregon Department of Education  is confirmed to speak during the event.
    • ESSA and the Oregon Plan For Education: What You Need to Know 
    • Dr. Smith will cover the high level content of the new plan for education in Oregon.  This plan is inclusive of both the new federal guidelines under ESSA as well as the vision that citizens, parents, students, educators, and to other stakeholders have for a well-rounded education for Oregon's students.  The keynote will cover four major areas: Assessment, Standards and Accountability, School/District Improvement, and Educator Effectiveness.   The commitment to education equity is a key component of this work."
    • Dr. Smith will present teach a post-keynote session, ESSA and the Oregon Plan For Education: What You Need to Know – Going Deeper.  If you have questions about ESSA, join Dr. Smith for a Q&A on ESSA and how it will ensure a well-rounded education for all of Oregon’s students.

THURSDAY SYMPOSIA

OACE is pleased to announce three different symposia for Thursday.   They are available to conference attendees for an additional fee.
  • Homeless – Dona Bolt and Tara Dixson will co-present a full-day session.   Strategies for Success: District Homeless Liaisons and Foster Student Contacts  For the McKinney-Vento Liaison, no two days may ever be the same. With more homeless students and new federal guidelines, district Liaison workloads are increasing. Some Liaisons have also become the foster student Point-of-Contact. This interactive Symposium will feature short presentations by Liaisons and state specialists for homeless and foster student programs on topics such as: collaboration with pupil transportation, working through inter-district disputes, organizing your office for separate functions, working with early childhood and higher education partners, managing volunteers and handling donations. Be ready to share your best tips and favorite life hacks for how to be indispensable while also preserving your sanity.
  • Civil Rights/Title IX – Karen Moscon will present a full-day symposium.  
  • Translations – PM Only; David Jazmin with the Greater Albany School District will present a half-day session in the afternoon with colleagues from the district.  Greater Albany Public Schools (GAPS) Interpreting and Translation Symposium.  This session is designed with the intent to explain interpretation and translation practices developed and implemented by GAPS to help the communication between parents and schools, meeting standards mandated by state and federal regulations. We hope to provide you with tools that help you improve your current systems of communication and standardize bilingual hiring practices to assure the highest level of competence. We would like to network with other school districts, throughout the presentation please feel free to openly share your practices and procedures.

saturday parent symposium

Rick Puente from the Beaverton School District will lead an exciting event with hands-on learning experiences for parents at the Parent Saturday Symposium. The event is entitled “Casos de la Vida Real.”  All activities will be in Spanish and translated into English.
